Deane Roofing & Cladding were appointed by Winthrop Engineering to design, supply, install and commission the roof and cladding envelope for a new Data Centre in Grangecastle, Co Dublin.

The schedule from the start was very demanding. The design had to be expedited in order to get systems ordered in time for site start. To do this all elements were fast-tracked. The steel design and envelope systems were developed at the same time. Detailing was also created in tandem. There is a significant risk in doing this as they are all interdependent and knowledge and expertise are crucial when developing details at such an early stage of the process.

The roofing system was developed to specific Client requirements and the system included a cementitious board over the metal deck and then again over the thermal insulation in the build up. A fully adhered bitumen bonded Paraflex built-up roofing system was laid over the substrate which is always a challenge starting at the beginning of winter with such an demanding schedule ahead.

There was significant emphasis on the Internal Test Plan( ITP), inspection regime and quality monitoring and control as there would be no time in the schedule to carry out remedial work if there were problems. The schedule was driven by the delivery of units to the roof and this was a milestone that could not change.

The cladding was equally challenging as it was dependant on the progress of the roof in order to close in the building. The Kingspan Longspan Karrier panel was also enhanced by a hook-on cassette system which had to be ordered before the cladding commenced on site and there was a significant risk in this having no building to survey. However, with some clever design, tolerance was built in, to allow for the possibility of change to the built structure.

This was an extremely challenging project with high-quality objectives delivered in a very short time period.
